Greg is a senior IT Executive with over 40 years IT experience. The last 18 years were in various senior roles. Most of Greg’s experience has been in financial services at large blue chip companies in South Africa. He has worked in life assurance, banking, health and pension sectors, handling large and complex strategic initiatives and projects.
Greg has worked in most aspects of IT, which enables him to play an effective executive role in managing the strategic and operational aspects of both IT and other organisational processes. His IT expertise includes deep knowledge of enterprise architecture, project management and systems development methodologies. He has been actively involved in exploiting the opportunities offered by new digital platforms to transform the business. Greg has also kept up-to-date with the latest people-development approaches, and used this knowledge successfully to drive people development within the IT divisions.
Greg has good financial services experience. He has been responsible for large systems development and enterprise package implementations. His experience include being a part of the leadership team that created the first e-commerce bank in South Africa, playing the role of CIO. He also investigated the possibility of creating off-shore capacity in South Africa for an international bank. He successfully led the re-development of a financial services administration platform with a major Indian software company, which ran for a few years. He also successfully led the investigation and creation of a business case to re-new and migrate the legacy platforms of a large blue chip organisation. Other achievements include creating a strategic vendor management office, creating a successful Test Competency Centre of Excellence and being part of a strategic team driving digital disruption within financial services.
Greg is acknowledged as an effective manager and leader, with a good mix of execution skills and highly developed people skills. He is a visionary who has developed a reputation for successful delivery as well. He has a good appreciation of best practice approaches like systems thinking and scenario planning. He has good conceptual skills and is able to learn new things quickly. Greg’s track record includes “fixing” dysfunctional IT organisations and re-engineering IT processes to ensure successful on-time project delivery.
Greg’s has good experience in strategy formulation, business process improvement and programme and project management. He also has the ability to align IT and the business to ensure successful collaboration and partnership across these organisations. He has well developed interpersonal skills and is a good and confident communicator.
Greg has a BCom Honours in Information Systems from the University of Cape Town. He has attended various leadership and training courses throughout his career, and attends key conferences every year to keep up with the latest trends. Greg also presents training on leadership skills at the Cape Town Graduate Business School and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). Greg is also a certified Executive Coach and uses methodologies informed by the latest neuroscience research.
Greg has various diplomas in areas like project management, enterprise architecture and finance, and has completed many IT-related courses.
Greg is currently the Head of IT Strategy and Enterprise Architecture, reporting to the CIO. Previously he managed the Application Development division for a large Life Assurance company, with responsibility for 300 people. In this role, Greg was recruited to resolve application delivery issues and re-new the IT culture.
